What Is “Social Media” and Why Should I Care?

The new buzzword for generating millions in online marketing is “social media”. But what is it, really? ‘Social Media’ means using web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue. In simple terms, it is the usage of online and mobile tools like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, SMS etc in order to share information and to engage in two-way conversation with the audience.

Key takeaways:

Social Media uses mobile and online mediums: Either social networks like Facebook and Twitter, or mobile technologies like SMS or MMS.

Social Media is used to share info: This is what its all about. Sharing info. You can share a joke or a news item, but it is guaranteed to reach far and wide with minimal effort.

Social Media carries out an interactive dialog: This is the main difference between social and traditional media. Use social media and not only will you inform your audience, but will also get timely feedback from your listeners.

Latest research divides social media into six categories:

  1. Collaborative projects (e.g. Wikipedia, Google Maps, Reddit, etc)
  2. Blogs & Microblogs (e.g. WordPress blogs, Twitter, etc)
  3. Content Communities (e.g. Flickr, YouTube, etc.)
  4. Social Networking Sites (e.g. Facebook, Google+, etc)
  5. Virtual game worlds or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games [MMORPGs] (e.g. World of Warcraft)
  6. Virtual social worlds (e.g. Second Life)

Now let’s discuss the things more important to us; how can social media benefit us, and how we can leverage this to earn money.

Social Media can benefit us in two ways:

  1. Enhance reputation and credibility
  2. Enhance income

Increasing your income via social media is simple, but not easy. What do I mean by that? Well it simply means that understanding it is very simple, but implementing it is not always easy. It’s just like losing weight. Everybody knows you can lose weight by eating less and exercising more, then why is it so hard to lose weight? So without further ado, let’s look at the steps:

  1. Find some products to sell (ClickBank, CommissionJunction, etc)
  2. You can create your own product
  3. You can find a product to advertise. Some good places to find products are CommissionJunction and ClickBank. Signing up is free!
  4. If you have your own product, you can skip this step. If not, then login to your affiliate marketplace, and search for a product which satisfies the following criteria
    1. Is already generating sales or has the potential to generate sales (ClickBank calls this property ‘Gravity’)
    2. People are already searching for it (Use the excellent Google AdWords Tool)
    3. Has low competition on search engines (Just Google it!)
    4. Is something that is genuinely of value Please avoid hoaxes and scams! No amount of income is worth ruining your reputation.
  5. Setup a website where you will sell the product
  6. Promote the site through social media

Notice that steps 1-3 seem pretty easy to follow, but step 4 seems a little bit vague. Promoting the site through ‘social media’ is something more easily said than done. There is no formula or steps that anyone can give you. It’s more about learning, implementing, and refining your strategies.
